PROJECT PORRIDGE
Through education and meeting basic needs, we enable Moms to be the best they can be!
We provide teaching on basic childcare, breast-feeding, first-aid, child development, child abuse prevention, hygiene, disease prevention, and family planning. This teaching is conducted by leaders of Project Porridge, a nurse and/or a social worker.
At the same time, we design, construct, maintain and harvest a cooperative style demonstration garden, whereby all the mothers share equally in everything associated with the garden. In this garden, mothers learn how to grow protein-based foods, rotate crops, and use land more efficiently. The women gain improved methods of cultivation that can be used in their own gardens and shared with other women in their community who are not part of Project Porridge. In addition, when the crops are harvested, women are able to take any surplus produce and sell it in the local market, which can then provide a small wage for them.
